Smart View Error When refreshing Large Ad Hoc Sheets: “Smart View handled an unknown exception thrown by Microsoft Office.”

The error has been reported on HFM versions 11.1.2.2.500 onwards.

When attempting to refresh large Ad Hoc Files users were receiving the following error: “Smart View handled an unknown exception thrown by Microsoft Office.”

It was initially believed that the issue was a bug. This was recorded as a fix on smart view version 11.1.2.5.600. However, this is not always the case.

From investigations the issue was due to the loss of network connections on a IIS level. This was discovered by finding ASP.NET errors on the Web Server indicating an issue with the smart view "HFMOfficeProvider.aspx" link.

The solution was run the command prompt "IISRESET". This re-estabilished the links. 

Note: It may be worth confirming the last time the Hyperion Services were restarted. Regular scheduling to restart the Hyperion Services can also help with performance.
