Symptoms

Deployment of a CAPEX application in Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA) fails. The Planning log files show the following error:

"...member can't be found"

Cause

Missing CAPEX/Workforce required dimensions in the application view.

Solution

In order to deploy a Workforce or Capex application in EPMA 9.3.1 you must load Workforce or Capex .ads files that bring in specific dimension members, smart lists, etc. into the application view.

If an application view is valid for Workforce or Capex plan types and these required members are missing from the application view, the deployment to Planning will error (as expected/designed) with an error
"...member can't be found". This occurs because the deployment is trying to create certain forms during the Workforce/Capex initialization process and can't find the required members for the forms.

A possible workaround in order to deploy Workforce/Capex application, is to initialize Workforce and/ or Capex in a classic Planning application and then upgrade it to EPMA.

Cause

There is a timeout in the JDBC connection between Calc Manager and the Database.

Solution

Increase the Planning web session timeout to a number larger than the time it takes to execute the rules in the sequence.

The planning web session timeout is controlled by the entry "60" in the web.xml available under WEB-INF folder where planning is deployed.

To change the session timeout setting:

1. Open the timeout setting file for your Web application server.
For example, in Apache Tomcat 5.0.28, open the web.xml file in the driveletter:\Tomcat
\conf directory.

2. Modify the timeout setting for the Web application server, and save your changes.
For example, for Apache Tomcat 5.0.28, change the number 60 in the session-timeout setting
to the number of minutes to use.
To modify timeout settings, see the documentation for your Web application server.

Purpose

Troubleshooting Hyperion Calc Manager issues with an emphasis on using Calc Manager with Hyperion Planning.

Troubleshooting Steps

Troubleshooting Details

                Overview

The purpose of calculation manager is to offer one common interface to design calculation rules for different products (i.e. HFM, Planning, Essbase).  The graphical flow provides a clearer view of the calculation process.  With reusable rules and components and templates it provides ease of maintenance.  Rules can also be organized in a custom folder structure.

Calc manager can be used with EPMA and Classic Planning applications while Business Rules is only used with classic applications.

NOTE: You can see business rules if edit_dim_enabled=true is set in “Manage Properties”.  For EPMA applications this is useful if you need to migrate old business rules into calculation manager.

                Basic Terms

Rule set contains a collection of rules

Rule contains a combination of formula components or script components, in addition to conditional (i.e. IF/Then) and loop objects

Formula Component consists of a collection of formula calculation statements.

Script Component consists of a collection of self contained valid VB scripts (for HFM) or calc command/functions(for Essbase and Planning) statements.

Templates are a set of predefined standard calc related to financial Planning, Essbase (i.e. Clear data, Copy Data, Essbase commands, Amount= Rate*Unit, Aggregate, Allocate), and HFM.

General Troubleshooting

I.  Tuning considerations

  • In the calcMgrConfig.properties file you may want to increase the HBR.timeout to 60000 and remove the comment # from this row.
  • In addition to traditional java settings of Xms and Xms you may want to consider increasing the default stack size as well –Xss.
  • We recommend rules that take longer than one hour to be run in batch, not on the web but if you have some that take longer, consider increasing the session timeout on the web application server.

II.   Validation / deployment considerations

  • Rules are designed against one EPMA or classic Planning application
    • Then the rule needs to be “deployed” to a Planning application to be launched
    • A rule can be shared and deployed to multiple Planning applications
  • Rules are validated:
    • Either against the EPMA application
    • Or against the Planning application, if the application is deployed
    • Rules do not necessarily need to be valid in order to be deployed
  • Ensure the calc manager service is up and running.

If you delete the rule within Calc Manager, it will not be automatically be removed from the Planning application  To remove the deleted from from the Plannign application, you have to Go in the deployment view in calc mgr. Uncheck the deleted rules from the list of rules to be deployed and run a full deployment, by right clicking on the app name.

  • If any of your RTP variables do not have a default value, then validation against Planning will fail. Rule can still be deployed and be executed in Planning

III.  Migration considerations

  • When you migrate from HBR to Calc Manager
    • Sequences become Rule Sets
    • Macros become templates
    • HBR Security can be migrated  using the HBRMigrateSecurity.cmd utility after migration and deployment of rules
    • Projects become folders in business rules security in the Planning administration section, after running the utility defined above
    • Rules must be deployedLaunch LOCATION has been replaced by a deployed application(s)
  • Make sure when creating an application that you accurately choose between Calc manager or Business rules depending on your needs.  You can still change this setting after having generated the Planning application. But in Planning, you will not see HBR rules if the calculation engine is Calc manager, and vice versa
  • If your source environment is not accessible from Calc Manager, Business Rules can be exported from a source environment (File > Export). Make sure you choose the option “Export to Calc manager” in HBR. The exported XML file can be imported into a target Calculation Manager and the rules deployed to the desired Planning application.

Consider reviewing:

  • “Migrating Business Rules to Calculation Manager” in the Installation and Configuration Guide
  • "Managing Business Rules” in the Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Architect Administrator's Guide
  • “Migrating Business Rule Security” in the Oracle Hyperion Planning Administrator's Guide

In 11.1.2.2 you are no longer able to use HBR so be sure to review the following documentation before an upgrade to that release

  • 11.1.2.2 Installation and Configuration guide http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_install_1112200.pdf
    • Page 22:  About Migrating Business Rules to Calculation Manager Rules
    • Page 127: Business Rules Maintenance Release and Upgrade Installation Prerequisites
    • Page 145
    • Page 166, 244: Importing Business Rules to Calculation Manager for use with Essbase
    • Page 169, 255: Migrating Business Rules to Calculation Manager for use with Planning
    • Page 170, 256: Migrating Business Rule Security

  • How to Migrate an EPMA Application that uses Business rules in Version 9.3.1 to version 11.1.1.3.x to Use Calculation Manager (as it is an EPMA application)? (Doc ID 1362715.1)

IV.  Debug / Launch considerations

  • Most issue with calculation manager will be capture in one of the following logs by default:
    • hyperion\logs\services\HyS9CALC-sysout.log
    • hyperion\logs\services\HyS9CALC-syserr.log
    • hyperion\logs\  calcmgr\calcmgrserver.log

  • You may also find useful information in these logs:
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrdeploy.log
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrexecution.log
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrlaunch.log
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\hbrserver.log

  • However if you still aren’t sure what is going wrong, these properties files can also be adjusted
    • Hyperion/deployments/weblogic9/servers/calcmgr/webapps/calcmgr/web-inf/conf/calcmgrlog4j.properties
    • Hyperion/deployments/weblogic9/servers/calcmgr/webapps/calcmgr/web-inf/conf/calcmgrconfig.propeties

The calcmgrconfig.properties contains DEBUG_METHODS=true which is similar to the old DEBUG_ENABLED=true as well as HBR.maxconn , HBR.timeout, and DATABASE_CACHE_REFRESHRATE, and quite a few other settings.

The calcmgrlog4j.properties sets the level of logging for JVM OUTPUT .  INFO is usually sufficient unless directed by development to request DEBUG, which will write many extra unnecessary records to the logs.  You can set any of these components to log more information.

  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.awb=INFO
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.calcmgr=INFO
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.GenericLogger=INFO

The following are commented out by default:

  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.common.DefaultLogger=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.common.JSON=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.web.common.BaseAction=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.database.DBImport=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.web.common.DimensionServerService=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.core.CalcMgrSession=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.security.ObjectPrivilege=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.database.DBConnectionManager=DEBUG

For debugging purposes you can enable options to copy xml files that are generated during import, migration, validation, or deployment by uncommenting these lines and providing the valid directory (# eg: c:\\temp\\deploy. Double backslash as a separator is required) in the CalcMgrConfig.properties file

 #IMPORT_DIR=<import debug directory>

#MIGRATE_DIR=<migrate debug directory>

#VALIDATE_DIR=<validation debug directory>

#DEPLOY_DIR=<deploy debug directory>

Please note, these properties will eventually moved into the Shared services registry

*** Reviewed for Currency 10-Oct-2012 ***

Symptoms

Receive the error messages below loading the ads file during Dimension Import:

"500 -- Internal Server Error"

In logs see the error below:

"ERROR org.apache.struts.upload.CommonsMultipartRequestHandler - Failed to parse multipart request
org.apache.commons.fileupload.FileUploadException: Processing of multipart/form-data request failed. C:\DOCUME~1\user1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\user1\servers\EPMAWebServer\tmp\_WL_user\awb\user1\public\upload_00000008.tmp (The system cannot find the path specified)"

Cause

The TEMP and TMP variables are not defined in the Environment Variables for the "user1" that was used to start the services.

Solution

Log in to the server with the user "User1" and set the environment variable for TEMP and TMP by following the navigation

My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables

Symptoms

When you try to reverse engineer RKM Hyperion Planning, you get:

...

Cause

When Local (No agent) is used as the agent, execution is local to the client, not the ODI server. In this case, driver files must be installed to the client machine.

Solution

Install the driver files on the machine where the Agent runs -- in this case, the client.

To install the Hyperion adapters you:
1. Unzip
2. Copy all files in the Drivers folder to the Drivers folder under ODI install, e.g. c:\OraHome_1\oracledi\drivers

***Checked for relevance on 11-Nov-2010***

Symptoms

Business Rules available in the Planning web periodically disappear. Rules are available, both those attached to forms and in the list under Tools > Business Rules disappear.

This problems happens intermittently.

Cause

@ This is a manifestation of Bug 7417655 which is common in version 9.2.1

The embedded timeout parameter in the HBRServer.properties file is set to 10 by default. If there is more than 10 minutes of inactivity in Planning web, the rules disappear. Since the Planning web session itself is set to time out after 30 minutes by default, this leads to a situation where the web session is still available, but no rules are visible.

Solution

1. Increase the HBR.embedded_timeout= parameter in the HBRServer.properties file located under you Planning deployment. The exact path varies according to what web application server you are using:

TOMCAT:
\\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\Tomcat\5.0.28\HyperionPlanning\webapps\HyperionPlanning\WEB-INF\classes

WEBLOGIC
\\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\WebLogic\8.1\HPDomain\applications

WEBSPHERE
\\Websphere\AppServer\InstalledApps\\HyperionPlanning.ear\HyperionPlanning.war

OR

\\Websphere\AppServer\InstalledApps\\HyperionPlanning.ear\HyperionPlanning.war\WEB-INF\classes

This parameter is set to 10 minutes by default; increase it to 35 by editing the line below:

HBR.embedded_timeout=35

2. Save HBRServer.properties and restart the Planning service for the setting to take effect. You do not need to restart any other services.

Hyperion Planning - Version: 9.3.1.2.00 and later   [Release: 9.3 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When attempting to add many members to 'Default Value' of Global variable of Business Rule the following error occurs:
Error while sending command to HBR Server running within the EAS server.
Detail:com.hyperion.hbr.excp.DatabaseException.<init>(java.lang.String, [Ljava.lang.Object;, com.hyperion.hbr.excp.ExceptionSeverity, java.lang.Throwable)

Alternatively if you create variables to hold these selections the rule is unable to validate resulting something similar to:
Detail:Cannot calculate. Analytic Server Error(1200422): Error parsing  formula for [FIX STATEMENT] (line 3): expected type [BOOLEAN] found [MEMBER] in function [OR]

Cause

This is due to character limit on column in table HBRVARIABLES VALUE VARCHAR2(255).

Using custom list of members assigned to variable.
eg. GVar1 "300000", "310000", "311000", "400000",...

Solution

Large cherry-pick-lists are not recommended due to table column limits and generated script size.  Instead Essbase functions should be used, hence the excluded section was added in the multi member selector to make it easier to build a selection using functions.

If the selection cannot be built using the children or decendants functions, use the @UDA function.  Members can be tagged with an UDA in the outline.
Storing the selection in the outline is safer than storing it in an Business Rule variable.

Applies to:

Hyperion Planning - Version: 11.1.1.0.00 and later   [Release: 11.1 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Business Rule Ruleset option 'Merge Variables' does not honour local variables.

Cause

Local variables cannot be merged across Business Rules as they could represent different values although they have the same name.

For example, the following shows a conflict if the local variables were merged:

FirstHBR variable 'Name' -> used to store the Entity name
SecondHBR variable 'Name' -> used to store the Account name

If these variables were merged, the member selection menu would only show either the Account or Entity members. Subsequently one of the RTP values will be invalid and the calculation will fail. In other scenarios the calculation may not fail but produces wrong results.

Solution

To take advantage of this feature use global variables. In addition, Business rules which use global variables are likely to perform better.

Planning users only: On Variables, select Merge Variables to merge all instances of the same variable
used in the business rule so only the first instance of each variable is displayed when the rule is launched.
If you do not select this check box, all instances of each variable are displayed.

Note:
If you select Merge Variables, the first value that the user enters for the runtime prompt is used
for all subsequent occurrences of that runtime prompt during validation and launch.

Symptoms

After changing the provisioning for a user from Administrator to Planner is not reflected in the Planning web interface.

Cause

The change in provisioning is not synchronized yet to Planning which means that users are still visible with their previous role.

Solution

Synchronization is triggered upon doing the following:

- When the user logs in.
- When filters are refreshed via the 'Manage database' option in Planning desktop (Selecting filters only).
- When access to a dimension/member is given to the user in Planning web, then that user is synchronized.
- Running the ProvisionUsers.cmd

Note: the provisionUsers has to be run on the Planning Server.

Hyperion Financial Management - Version 9.2.0.1.00 to 11.1.2.3.702 [Release 9.2 to 11.1]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

SYMPTOMS

Delete Invalid Records does not complete.
HsvEventLog.log contains errors like this:

<Num HEX=0x80041E80>-2147213696</Num>
<Description Src=HFM>An unknown error has occurred in the HsvDSData2 object </Description>

<Svr>...</Svr>
<File>CHsvDSData2RefInt.cpp</File>
<Line>2610</Line>
<Ver>9.2.1.0.2143</Ver>

CHANGES

This is usually observed when big changes are implemented in metadata, resulting in great numbers of records becoming invalid. It is very likely to appear after deleting an entire Scenario, for example.

CAUSE

The process heavily relies on database performance. As soon as the database cannot keep up with requests from the application, the process is aborted. There appears to be less tolerance of database failures in this particular feature of FinancialManagement.
Database performance can be slow for a number of reasons (heavy usage, bad network, bad indexes etc) which are not covered in this note.

SOLUTION

The process will completes as long as you set the SQLCommandTimeout to a high enough value, for example 240.

You can change this value on the FinancialManagement application server under Windows registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hyperion Solutions\Hyperion Financial Management\Server. Create a DWORD called SQLCommandTimeout if not there already. Reboot the application server after the change.

This value may not be optimal for day-to-day operations of Financial Management. Unless you are also experiencing other issues / errors related to slow database performance, it is recommended to revert back to the original value (or delete the parameter) after a successful run of Delete Invalid Records.

Please make sure a full backup of the registry exists.

The Drill Back issue from HFM to FDM can be caused by a number of factors:

1. There is a known issue with Oracle where the issue occurs when one day data is exported to a certain POV and then the next export load file does not contain that specific data HFM does not update the cell to remove the symbol.

Oracle tried this for 11.2.2 and it effected the adaptor performance. It is recommended to clarify to the users that if they wish to drill back it is exactly to what has last been exported to HFM from FDM. The drill back simply works by connecting to the latest Export file in the FDM outbox for that particular POV. HFM does not update the cells to drill back or no longer drill back.
2. When this error occurrs please check that the Dimension Headings, Labels in FDM match HFM. For example is in HFM if Custom1 is actually named "Movements" then in FDM Custom1 should also be named "Movements"
3. When updating the Period Control table "Periods" via excel the FDM table "tPOVPeriod" is updated. However the update of this table is not automatically filtered to table "tPOVPeriodAdaptor". This is also a known issue with Oracle, however their recommendation is manually update the table. A more efficient approach is to amend the excel template exported from the "Periods" control table.
The following changes to excel template are:
1. Unhide rows 5 to 8
2. Change table name from "tPOVPeriod" to tPOVPeriodAdaptor"
3. Replace the second column too "InsystemKey"
4. Populate the rows to the bottom of the table with the Target System Adaptor (FM11X-G5-E)
5. Remove column "Text Description"
6. Rename the excel file and save.
7. Log into FDM Web Client
8. Go to "Tools" and select "Import XLS"
9. Click Browse to locate your saved excel file
      10. Click "Import"
      11. With access to the SQL Server confirm that the table "tPOVPeriodAdatpor" has been updated accordingly.
      12. Test the Drill Back with a POV that has recently been load through FDM.
Please find attached screen shots of changes and testing results.
In essence the tables "tPOVPeriod" and "tPOVPeriodAdaptor" must match with regards to the same number of periods and years.

Hi David,

Ok great thanks.

Kind Regards
Ben

Hi Ben, I called your office on Friday to catch up. I’ve managed to find where the issue was/is.

With vWorkspace disabling printer pass through isn’t as simple as with Citrix.

Once that had been sorted individually to the Hyperion RDSH and we relied just on the printers on the server the selection works and all printers are fine.

Symptoms

Unable to start the EPMA Server Service.  The below error is reported in the Event Viewer for EPMA Dimension Server/ EPMA Server:

Hyperion.CommonServices.Exceptions.DataAccessLayerException: To run the Dimension Server, both ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION and READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT database settting must be set to 'ON'. Their values are currently 'OFF' and 'OFF' respectively. Please consult the product documentation for details.

Cause

Prerequisite when using MSSQL Server with Hyperion 11.1.2.x was not done.

Solution

Per the "Oracle® Enterprise Performance Management System Installation Start Here Guide", when creating a Microsoft SQL Server database for use as a repository, ensure that you set these options:

  • Set READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT = ON
  • Set ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION = ON
  • Select the SQL Server and Windows authentication option when you set the security properties for the database.
  • All products support Latin Collation for the SQL Server database. Create a database that is case insensitive and use this statement: SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.

1.  Login to MSSQL Server Management.
2.  Connect to the EPMA Database.
3.  Run the below SQL Statements:

    ALTER DATABASE <DatabaseName>
    SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON
    GO
    ALTER DATABASE <DatabaseName>
    SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ON
    GO

4. Start the EPMA Server service.

Note: The setting can be located within the following path: <DatabaseName> - Views - System Views - sys.databases

It is worth while to check before AND after the fix has been run

Symptoms

Starting a metadata upload via ODI Designer causes the error message "Driver must be specified".

Planning application uses Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA).

Cause

Planning application uses EPMA

ODI only works with Classic Applications.

Solution

Write to EPMA Interface tables instead.

You should be familiar with the section in 'Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Architect, Administrator's Guide' (epma_admin.pdf) entitled 'Using Interface Tables'.

1. Start off by defining/creating interface tables using the Configuration Utility.
2. In EPMA, create an Import Profile, mapping the interface tables correctly.
3. Once all this is set up and working, you start to load into the tables from ODI. You need to update the relevant tables, e.g. for Entities you need to update the HS_ENTITY_* tables. New members would have to be added to the HS_ENTITY_MEMBER and HS_ENTITY_HIERARCHY tables, and their properties to HS_Entity_PropertyArray and HS_Entity_Property tables.

Changes

Planning PSU 11.1.2.1.101 has been installed

Cause

There is a problem in the software code in the jsp file: EnterData_Inner.jsp which is executed when opening a Planning webform.

The execution fails because of a missing record for the '0' value in the HSP_TEXT_CELL_VALUE table.

The issue was reported in an unpublished Bug 13564186 - "communication error with server" error while opening data forms -11.1.2.1.101.

Solution

To resolve this issue, you should download PSE 13588588 from My Oracle Support (Patches & Updates section) and install it following the instructions provided in the PSE readme file.

Download Information:

    4. Microsoft Database
      • Microsoft SQL Server -> Double Click "FDMEE_DATA_SERVER_MSSQL"
    5. Definition Tab -> Change User and Pssword
    6. JDBC Tab -> Verify Driver and URL

Once all of the above steps have been updated restart the FDMEE Services.

When attempting to make changes to any of the custom dimensions (in this case custom4) the software could simply crash.

The type of change that I was attempting to make was to create a new parent value and then move existing parents into it.

I managed to find a workaround by extracting the metadata as an ".APP" file and then make the changes there.

Oracle confirmed this is indeed a bug with the software. SR: 3-9876664321 Not sure if any of you have experienced this? EMT are currently on 11.1.2.2.307. I was able to replicate this issue with the same file on 11.1.2.2.500 and 11.1.2.3.500. The HFM application itself is fine. User are entering data, consolidating, etc with no issues.

Purpose of this document
This document details the process to correct the review levels if the Submission Phases table is populated half way through tuning the process control.

Issue
When using Phases in Process Control and the users have managed to promote phase 3 higher than phase 2 then due the entries in "Submission Phases" the system will be stuck in a loop and will not allow the user to promote.

Solution
In order to resolve this issue the user needs to completely clear the "Submission Phases" table. Once cleared the user can proceed with correcting the phases and setting them to the correct level.

Goal

How can we migrate Business Rules from one Classic Planning environment to another when using Calculation Manager to manage them? The rules are not showing up in the destination environment Calculation Manager.

Solution

Planning 11.1.1.3 introduced the option to use Calculation Manager to manage Business Rules for classic Planning applications. However, there is no way to migrate the rules from one environment to another using LifeCycle Management (LCM) in such a way that the rules are manageable in the target environment Calculation Manager.

Because the Planning application is Classic, it is not listed under the "Foundation" node in Shared Services. Rules can therefore only be selected for migration using LCM from the Planning application node in Shared Services. When the export LCM files are imported on the target environment, the Business Rules are correctly copied into the target Planning application's relational database.

The rules are then available in the target Planning application, users can be assigned access, and they can be launched. However, they are not available in the target environment Calculation Manager, and there is no way to administer the rules. There is no way to "reverse deploy" the rules from the Planning application back into Calculation Manager.

To work around this issue the Business Rules can be exported from within the source environment Calculation Manager (File > Export). The exported XML file can then be imported in the target Calculation Manager and the rules deployed to the desired Planning application.

An enhancement request (9323549) has been logged for this issue.

Goal

The Essbase server was installed as part of the EPM platform (not as Standalone mode) . How to start the Essbase server for administration purposes without shared Services. Is there is an alternative to the standard script or a Workaround ?

Solution

Since the registry database was introduced in version 11.x, it is not possible to startup Essbase as a standalone unless Essbase was initially installed in a standalone mode. Even if installed in a standalone mode, foundation Shared services needs to be installed first and once Essbase set up it could be started without Shared Services service actually running as opposed to a non standalone install.

The user was unable to run ANY FR reports from Workspace.

Data Forms and Grids were running with no errors.

No other users were experiencing this issue.

Cause:

Once the user clicked on report the pop web window changed form "Intranet" to "Local Internet". Therefore the security rules were different thus preventing the window to successfully open the report.

These settings are configured on Citrix via group policy.

Hyperion Planning - Version: 11.1.2.0.00 to 11.1.2.0.00 - Release: 11.1 to 11.1
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

In version 11.1.2.0.00 of the Oracle EPM LCM utility, unable to migrate Planning Application's access permissions via the Shared Services LCM Utility.  The LCM import of access permissions into the Planning applications fail with error "Premature end of File", displayed in the Migration Status Report.

Cause

This issue was caused by an unpublished BUG "10236113 - ERROR "PREMATURE END OF FILE" OCCURS WHEN LOADING ACCESS PERMISSIONS VIA LCM"

If there are no Access permissions associated with provisioned Group in the Planning application then the LCM utility will generate an empty .xml file for the corresponding Access permission artifact which will cause the error "Premature end of File"

Solution

This issue has been fixed in the Oracle EPM v11.1.2.1.00 release.  This release can be downloaded from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.

There are 2 separate workarounds that can be used in EPM v11.1.2.0:

1.  Add a single access permission to the provisioned group with no defined access in the source application and then import the LCM package into the target application.

2.  Ignore the error message during import and continue importing remaining artifacts.

short description of the error: MSAD users fail to login to Essbase and get no access error message. It's only happening in Essbase, all the other application are fine and also native users can login. After restart Essbase services, it's working fine again, but couple of hours later it fails again.

Root cause: shared service failed to cache the user groups because of an unfiltered user group setting in shred service and it gets back to many records (all groups) from the LDAP server when it's trying to cache it, it throws out of memory java error.

logs to check:
AnalyticProviderServices0.log
SharedServices_SecurityClient.log
FoundationServices0.log
console_EssbaseAgent_AGENT.log

Find the error:
1. check the SharedServices_SecurityClient.log and if there is a suspiciously huge number of group response from the MSAD server (in this case it was 27000 record) and then there is a "Failed to unify group cache" error ([SRC_CLASS: com.hyperion.css.cache.CacheThread] [SRC_METHOD: buildCache] Failed to unify group cache.) then this is the problem.

2. check the shared service if the user group is supporting for MSAD and see if there is any group filter:

Resolution:
1. Temporary fix: Give more
heap memory to the ESS_CSS_JVM in the OPMN.XML (Xms and Xmx) options. This can be just a workaround while the user groups will be filtered.
2. Permanent fix: Put the lowest possible user group filter in shared service. This will optimise the search. MSAD admin can help find the suitable user group filter.

RPC Server is unavailable - As you have confirmed this warning occurs after a successful load of the metadata file. What this is indicating is that when sending a request to "LOAD METADATA" the system is waiting for a response from the Primary server. This makes sense as Merlins system is a multiple server application and when the Primary server does not respond then the request will go to the secondary server.

When I state "not responding" this is means there is either a network performance problem, or the Primary server has stopped responding.

This also answers your question regarding the Cluster error (Unable to QI the IHsvClusterController object on the remote server) as this includes both your application servers whereas in your development environment you simply have one application server.

For the error The Parameter is incorrect - As this is also occurring around the time of a Metadata Load Oracle have indicated it is an unpublished bug (14399702) and patching to 11.1.2.1.600 will resolve this as well. However in the meantime the Workaround is to restart the services on ALL the Application Servers. In this case BOTH.

Therefore I believe going forward whenever you need to end the processes make sure they have been on BOTH application Servers.

Issue Symptoms

When users try logging into Smart View Planning and selecting Ad-Hoc Analysis the session hangs and crashes. In addition, other users cannot log in and there is either a "Failure" or "Warning" notification within the WebLogic for the APS Module.

Cause

A metadata change had been made but was not correctly applied.

For example, a new parent was deployed, but the movement of subsequent account members to it wasn’t. The hierarchy is fine in EPMA, but doesn’t fully deploy to Planning, causing an orphaned Dynamic Calc parent.

Solution

Trace back and review recent metadata changes and correct as necessary.

> OK Oracle have provided me with the following solution:
>
> 1)Make sure the user experiencing this issue is not logged on HFM
> 2)Connect to the HFM database using Query Analyzer or equivalent SQL client
> 3)Run the following query:
>
> DELETE FROM appname_USERPARAMS WHERE Username LIKE '%youruser%'
>
> replacing "appname" with the application name and "youruser" with the username of the affected user. IMPORTANT: The USERPARAMS table stores user-based nformation such as HFM Cluster settings, Extended Analytics settings, Web Data Entry Form settings, Web Based Report Files. Executing the above SQL query will reset all these settings for the selected user.Log on with the user again and test.
>
> As we have tried a number of other scenarios now I believe the solution here will simply wipe the user logging information clean. The query will not effect any Hyperion setup.

Goal

How can we use the Smart View 11.1.1.3 client to connect both to Planning 11.1.1.3 and to an older Planning 9.3.1 system?

Solution
There are two ways that the Smart View 11.1.1.3 client can make a connection to a 9.3.1 Planning application:

  1. Connect directly to Planning, which does not depend on there being an available APS provider. This allows the user to open forms and run Business Rules. It does not allow for ad hoc analysis. If you do not require the ad hoc functionality then you can simply connect to the Planning 9.3.1 application(s) by defining the following URL provider in Smart View:

    http://hostname:8300/HyperionPlanning/SmartView

To use a URL provider change the view in Smart View from "Common Provider" to "Independent Provider Connections" and then Add a "URL Provider" and enter the URL above, where "hostname" is the name of your 9.3.1 Planning server. Note that you will see a message warning you that you are connecting to an older version of Planning, but that this is just an informational message.

  2. Connect via APS. This option allows the Smart View client to connect to the Essbase cube(s) of the Planning application, and perform ad hoc analysis similar to what can be done with the Essbase add-in for Excel. In effect you are connecting to the Planning application as though it were an Essbase application.

You cannot connect Smart View 11.1.1.3 to APS 9.3.1. However, if you require ad hoc analysis capabilities you can work around this problem by connecting to the 9.3.1 Essbase server via APS 11.1.1.3. In EAS 11.1.1.3 right-click on the Essbase Servers node and Add your 9.3.1 Essbase server. Now that your 9.3.1 Essbase server appears in the list it can be used by APS 11.1.1.3. In Smart View 11.1.1.3 you can now add the Essbase 9.3.1 server to the list and connect to it.

GOAL

The purpose of this note is to provide a formal definition of stuck threads in WebLogic Server.

SOLUTION

Stuck Thread

A thread might get stuck for various reasons. For example: When an SQL query is running and the time it takes to complete is say 800 seconds, then, as the default stuck thread timing is 600 seconds in WebLogic Server, the thread allocated for that query waits for 600 seconds and goes to stuck state.

The stuck state does not mean that it is stuck forever, and it might get unstuck at a later point of time which can be checked in the logs. But if there is no reference like that in the logs, then we might infer that the thread got stuck forever.

Tuning the Execute Thread Detection Behavior

WebLogic Server automatically detects when a thread in an execute queue becomes "stuck." Because a stuck thread cannot complete its current work or accept new work, the server logs a message each time it diagnoses a stuck thread.

If all threads in an execute queue become stuck, the server changes its health state to either "warning" or "critical" depending on the execute queue.

If all threads in the default queue become stuck, the server changes its health state to "critical." (The Node Manager application can automatically shut down and restart servers in the critical health state.)

If all threads in weblogic.admin.HTTP, weblogic.admin.RMI, or a user-defined execute queue become stuck, the server changes its health state to "warning."

WebLogic Server diagnoses a thread as stuck if it is continually working (not idle) for a set period of time. You can tune a server's thread detection behavior by changing the length of time before a thread is diagnosed as stuck, and by changing the frequency with which the server checks for stuck threads.

NOTE: Although you can change the criteria WebLogic Server uses to determine whether a thread is stuck, you cannot change the default behavior of setting the "warning" and "critical" health states when all threads in a particular execute queue become stuck.

To configure WebLogic Server stuck thread detection behavior

  1. Start the Administration Server if it is not already running.
  2. Access the Administration Console for the domain.
  3. Expand the Servers node in the left pane to display the servers configured in your domain.
  4. Click the name of the server instance that you want to modify for improved stuck thread detection.
  5. Select the Configuration -> Tuning tab in the right pane.
  6. Modify the following attributes as necessary to tune thread detection behavior for the server:
Stuck Thread Max Time: Enter the number of seconds, that a thread must be continually working before this server diagnoses the thread as being stuck. By default, WebLogic Server considers a thread to be "stuck" after 600 seconds of continuous use.

Stuck Thread Timer Interval: Enter the number of seconds, after which WebLogic Server periodically scans threads to see if they have been continually working for the length of time specified by Stuck Thread Max Time. By default, WebLogic Server sets this interval to 600 seconds.
  7. Click Apply to save your changes.
  8. Reboot the server to use the new settings.
NOTE: You configure stuck thread detection parameters on a per-server basis, rather than on a per-execute queue basis

SYMPTOMS

The following error msg is displayed many times during different dates: "which is more than the configured time (StuckThreadMaxTime) of "600" seconds. Stack trace:"

Provider services is frequently going down hitting the following error:

Stack trace

CAUSE

Environments need to be tuned when reaching the default setting limits interacting with Web Logic.

SOLUTION

In Essbase Administration Services use the default Stuck Threads settings as a starting point.
Then after careful testing of your long running transaction, adjust as needed.

Stuck Thread Max Time=600 ( Default Value)
Stuck Thread Max Time=1200 ( Suggested Value)

To modify the "Stuck Threads" setting:

1. Login to the Weblogic Admin Server Console.
2. Navigate to Domain Structure -> Servers.
3. Select EssbaseAdminServices0 (or the sever you want to modify).
4. On the Tuning Tab, select to "Lock & Edit".
5. Modify the setting "Stuck Thread Max Time" and "Save".

Hi Tanya,

This update is just info only.

Make backup copy of application
Add new category for prior year (date specific eg 2013)
Edit formulae to include new category in "Category" statements (7 logic files to amend)
Lock all users out of the system
Update rollover sets to include new category (change in Rollset - LastYear)
Order of rollover most important, run lastyear/actuals/budget/fullclear
Check dates in categories (pay attention to categories in full clear rollover set....previously dates have NOT incremented (?))
Unlock users

Client to then unlock all periods/all categories and reconsolidate all, then relock all

After completing the rollover, go into data-entry for the category last year. Set to Global, then Re-enter the closing exchange euro rates which should be 1.00000 for each period. Calc and save.

This will force the opening exchange rates to recalculate. Then consolidate all impacted in the usual way.
