Information in this document applies to any platform.
*** Checked for Relevance 20-Sep-2012 ***

Symptoms

The following error is received in Excel when opening a workbook that has been generated with the EPMA file generator in Excel 2010:

"Compile error in hidden module: ImportsWorkbook

This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the version, platform, or architecture of this application. Click "Help" for information on to correct this error."

This applies to Microsoft Excel 2010 only.

Cause

Problem is caused by stale Microsoft files in C:\Documents and Settings\<user_name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Forms after applying following Microsoft Update: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;932349

Applies to:

Hyperion Planning - Version: 9.3.1.0.00 and later   [Release: 9.3 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Error message while using Excel Add in: You have exceeded the maximum [%s] connections for this session.

Cause

The error message appears because Essbase has a limitation of 250 sessions - this is an Essbase limitation of 250 connection limit.

Solution

1. The maximum number of connections that are allowed per Port is 250. There is a 250 connection limit per port. Please use a different user ID and desktop as the workaround, so this way a different port can be used.

2. If using a different user ID and desktop is not feasible, increase the value of the maxlogins parameter as indicated below:

Increase the maxlogins in the Essbase.cfg file to 5000, and restart Essbase.

Note: Make sure that there are no sessions active within the EAS console before restarting the Essbase services.

Symptoms

Deployment of a CAPEX application in Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA) fails. The Planning log files show the following error:

"...member can't be found"

Cause

Missing CAPEX/Workforce required dimensions in the application view.

Solution

In order to deploy a Workforce or Capex application in EPMA 9.3.1 you must load Workforce or Capex .ads files that bring in specific dimension members, smart lists, etc. into the application view.

If an application view is valid for Workforce or Capex plan types and these required members are missing from the application view, the deployment to Planning will error (as expected/designed) with an error
"...member can't be found". This occurs because the deployment is trying to create certain forms during the Workforce/Capex initialization process and can't find the required members for the forms.

A possible workaround in order to deploy Workforce/Capex application, is to initialize Workforce and/ or Capex in a classic Planning application and then upgrade it to EPMA.

2009-10-14 12:05:17,529 WARN TP-Processor3 com.hyperion.calcmgr.database.DBConnectionManager -

Cause

There is a timeout in the JDBC connection between Calc Manager and the Database.

Solution

Increase the Planning web session timeout to a number larger than the time it takes to execute the rules in the sequence.

The planning web session timeout is controlled by the entry "60" in the web.xml available under WEB-INF folder where planning is deployed.

To change the session timeout setting:

1. Open the timeout setting file for your Web application server.
For example, in Apache Tomcat 5.0.28, open the web.xml file in the driveletter:\Tomcat
\conf directory.

2. Modify the timeout setting for the Web application server, and save your changes.
For example, for Apache Tomcat 5.0.28, change the number 60 in the session-timeout setting
to the number of minutes to use.
To modify timeout settings, see the documentation for your Web application server.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to introduce key CAPEX module concepts and features and present troubleshooting tips and a starting point for investigating issues that may arise while using the CapEx Module in Planning.

Troubleshooting Steps

Overview

Capital Asset expense planning is a specialized planning module that automates the planning of capital assets and capital asset related expenses, such as depreciation, maintenance and insurance.

The purpose of the predefined Capital Expenditure Module was to simplify implementation and reduce customization efforts and maintenance burdens by providing some functionality and best practices already built in to the data forms, accounts, calculations, menus, and smart lists.

Common Usage
• Plan for new asset purchases, and Depreciation/Amortization
• Not only can you plan for actions on existing and new tangible assets, but also intangible assets including impairments (i.e. Brand Valuation, Copyrights, etc)
• Plan for driver based/user defined asset related expenses
• Report on Assets

Convenient functions and features

  • Depreciation: Calculations for the most commonly used depreciation methods (i.e. Straight Line, Diminishing Balance, Sum of Years Digit) are pre-defined.
  • Depreciation Conventions: The ability to set the period in which depreciation starts if it varies from the in-service date.
  • Cash Flow Incidence: Set how cash outflow for capital purchases should occur; in the same month, next month or in a staggered method.
  • Funding Percentage & Funding Incidence: Set the percentage of funding for capital purchases from an external source. Also set the frequency of cash inflow for funding of capital purchases.
  • Capital Asset Related Expenses: Plan for expenses, such as insurance, repairs and maintenance associated with a capital asset by allocating a percentage.
  • Amortization: Indicate whether intangible capital assets should be finitely or indefinitely amortized across their useful lives.
  • Manage existing capital assets: Plan for transfers, retirements, improvements and impairments of capital assets from pre-built menu selections.
  • Real-time impact analysis: Users can visualize and assess the impact of capital asset expenses on general operating expenses, income statement, balance sheet and cash flow in real-time and on the same screen instead of toggling between multiple screens.

  • Here is an example of what comes out of the box with Planning for, in this case, depreciation:

    Predefined Smart List: DeprMethod
    Associated Account Member: "Depreciation Method"
Predefined Smart List Entries: NoDepr, SLN, SYD, DBYear, DBPeriod
    Predefined menus: Depreciation Summary Menu
Menu options: Depreciation Details (Data form), Roll up Asset (Business rule), Calculate Depreciation (Business rule), Calculate Existing Depreciation (Business rule)

General Troubleshooting
I. Confirm relevance to CapEx exclusively!

• Many of the calls logged against CAPEX as a product are actually just general Planning issues (i.e. form takes a long time to open, customized calc takes a long time to run, it takes a long time to log in, installation, refresh, or deployment error) and should be researched as not unique to Capex.

II. Debug / Logging considerations (Variations to locations will occur in versions prior to 11x)

• Most issues with Planning and CapEx will be captured in one of the following logs by default:
o hyperion\logs\services\HyS9Planning-sysout.log
o hyperion\logs\services\HyS9Planning-syserr.log

• Most issues with Business rules will be captured in one of the following logs by default:
o hyperion\logs\eas\Hbrlaunch.log
o hyperion\logs\eas\Hbrserver.log
o <EssbaseServer>/Hyperion/AnalyticServer/Essbase.log
o <EssbaseServer>/Hyperion/AnalyticServer /app/<AppName>/<AppName>.log

• Most issues with calculation manager will be captured in one of the following logs by default:
o hyperion\logs\services\HyS9CALC-sysout.log
o hyperion\logs\services\HyS9CALC-syserr.log
o hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrserver.log

III. Initialization / Deployment considerations

• If Capex is disabled:
o Change the registry.properties file usually located in C:\Hyperion\common\config from False to True for Capex: PLANNING_CAPEXPLNG_OPT=false,false and restart
o It is possible someone has hidden the initialize CAPEX menu HSP_SYSTEMCFG table in the application database, change REF_APP from 0 (or 1) to 2
• When creating an application, if you rename the capex cube, the system will still create the cube as Capex and not with the new name that was specified during the application creation.

• If reserved members are manually created in the accounts dimension with same name of members as those of capex dimensions (i.e. Land, Goodwill, Construction in progress) you will see error messages in the Planning system logs when you try to initialize indicating which members are duplicates, allowing you to delete them first.

• In order to deploy a Capex application in EPMA 9.3.1 you must load Capex .ads files that bring in specific dimension members, smart lists, etc. into the application view. If an application view is valid for Capex plan types and these required members are missing from the application view, the deployment to Planning will report an error "...member can't be found" because the deployment is trying to create certain forms during the Workforce/Capex initialization process and can't find the required members for the forms. A possible workaround is to initialize Workforce and/ or Capex in a classic Planning application and then upgrade it to EPMA.

IV. Application considerations

• The "No Year" member is not enabled in the Scenario's start and end year property in a CAPEX application, so you cannot grant write access to it.

• Capex does not provide a method to partially retire an asset or retire a portion of a single specified or line item asset. As a workaround, you would create two existing specified assets from the original single specified asset.

V. Troubleshooting considerations

When someone is reporting that some of the out of box or customized functionality did not work as expected the first step is to determine which component did not work properly.

Here is a list of some possibilities:

• A business rule
• A data form
• Predefined Menu (exapmle Depreciation Summary Menu has on data form and three business rules you can choose by default)
• Smart Lists (example: DeprMethod is associated with the "Depreciation Method" account member and includes entries like NoDepr, SLN, SYD, DBYear, DBPeriod)

Once you determine which component you are troubleshooting you move to the next step of determining the details, what should have happened, and how to track what actually happened.

Here is an example:
When you add an asset you are prompted to fill out values of a run time prompts that will be used to run the Add Asset rule. These are typically coded into FIX or IF statements within the rule or set as a variable within the rule.

If the prompts that are filled in manually in this screen

Or those being used as "members from the form" were not correct, you will get different results than you expected.

• In most cases you can review the hyperion\logs\eas\Hbrlaunch.log to determine what values were filled in and used for the calculation.
• You may also want to review the <EssbaseServer>/Hyperion/AnalyticServer /app/<AppName>/<AppName>.log for more calculation details.
• In some case you may need to enable DEBUG_ENABLED=TRUE and review the calculation details in the hyperion\logs\services\HyS9Planning-sysout.log and HyS9Planning-syserr.log

Purpose

Troubleshooting Hyperion Calc Manager issues with an emphasis on using Calc Manager with Hyperion Planning.

Troubleshooting Steps

Troubleshooting Details

                Overview

The purpose of calculation manager is to offer one common interface to design calculation rules for different products (i.e. HFM, Planning, Essbase).  The graphical flow provides a clearer view of the calculation process.  With reusable rules and components and templates it provides ease of maintenance.  Rules can also be organized in a custom folder structure.

Calc manager can be used with EPMA and Classic Planning applications while Business Rules is only used with classic applications.

NOTE: You can see business rules if edit_dim_enabled=true is set in “Manage Properties”.  For EPMA applications this is useful if you need to migrate old business rules into calculation manager.

                Basic Terms

Rule set contains a collection of rules

Rule contains a combination of formula components or script components, in addition to conditional (i.e. IF/Then) and loop objects

Formula Component consists of a collection of formula calculation statements.

Script Component consists of a collection of self contained valid VB scripts (for HFM) or calc command/functions(for Essbase and Planning) statements.

Templates are a set of predefined standard calc related to financial Planning, Essbase (i.e. Clear data, Copy Data, Essbase commands, Amount= Rate*Unit, Aggregate, Allocate), and HFM.

General Troubleshooting

I.  Tuning considerations

  • In the calcMgrConfig.properties file you may want to increase the HBR.timeout to 60000 and remove the comment # from this row.
  • In addition to traditional java settings of Xms and Xms you may want to consider increasing the default stack size as well –Xss.
  • We recommend rules that take longer than one hour to be run in batch, not on the web but if you have some that take longer, consider increasing the session timeout on the web application server.

II.   Validation / deployment considerations

  • Rules are designed against one EPMA or classic Planning application
    • Then the rule needs to be “deployed” to a Planning application to be launched
    • A rule can be shared and deployed to multiple Planning applications
  • Rules are validated:
    • Either against the EPMA application
    • Or against the Planning application, if the application is deployed
    • Rules do not necessarily need to be valid in order to be deployed
  • Ensure the calc manager service is up and running.

If you delete the rule within Calc Manager, it will not be automatically be removed from the Planning application  To remove the deleted from from the Plannign application, you have to Go in the deployment view in calc mgr. Uncheck the deleted rules from the list of rules to be deployed and run a full deployment, by right clicking on the app name.

  • If any of your RTP variables do not have a default value, then validation against Planning will fail. Rule can still be deployed and be executed in Planning

III.  Migration considerations

  • When you migrate from HBR to Calc Manager
    • Sequences become Rule Sets
    • Macros become templates
    • HBR Security can be migrated  using the HBRMigrateSecurity.cmd utility after migration and deployment of rules
    • Projects become folders in business rules security in the Planning administration section, after running the utility defined above
    • Rules must be deployedLaunch LOCATION has been replaced by a deployed application(s)
  • Make sure when creating an application that you accurately choose between Calc manager or Business rules depending on your needs.  You can still change this setting after having generated the Planning application. But in Planning, you will not see HBR rules if the calculation engine is Calc manager, and vice versa
  • If your source environment is not accessible from Calc Manager, Business Rules can be exported from a source environment (File > Export). Make sure you choose the option “Export to Calc manager” in HBR. The exported XML file can be imported into a target Calculation Manager and the rules deployed to the desired Planning application.

Consider reviewing:

  • “Migrating Business Rules to Calculation Manager” in the Installation and Configuration Guide
  • "Managing Business Rules” in the Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Architect Administrator's Guide
  • “Migrating Business Rule Security” in the Oracle Hyperion Planning Administrator's Guide

In 11.1.2.2 you are no longer able to use HBR so be sure to review the following documentation before an upgrade to that release

  • 11.1.2.2 Installation and Configuration guide http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_install_1112200.pdf
    • Page 22:  About Migrating Business Rules to Calculation Manager Rules
    • Page 127: Business Rules Maintenance Release and Upgrade Installation Prerequisites
    • Page 145
    • Page 166, 244: Importing Business Rules to Calculation Manager for use with Essbase
    • Page 169, 255: Migrating Business Rules to Calculation Manager for use with Planning

  • How to Migrate an EPMA Application that uses Business rules in Version 9.3.1 to version 11.1.1.3.x to Use Calculation Manager (as it is an EPMA application)? (Doc ID 1362715.1)

IV.  Debug / Launch considerations

  • Most issue with calculation manager will be capture in one of the following logs by default:
    • hyperion\logs\services\HyS9CALC-sysout.log
    • hyperion\logs\services\HyS9CALC-syserr.log
    • hyperion\logs\  calcmgr\calcmgrserver.log

  • You may also find useful information in these logs:
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrdeploy.log
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrexecution.log
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\calcmgrlaunch.log
    • hyperion\logs\Planning\hbrserver.log

  • However if you still aren’t sure what is going wrong, these properties files can also be adjusted
    • Hyperion/deployments/weblogic9/servers/calcmgr/webapps/calcmgr/web-inf/conf/calcmgrlog4j.properties
    • Hyperion/deployments/weblogic9/servers/calcmgr/webapps/calcmgr/web-inf/conf/calcmgrconfig.propeties

The calcmgrconfig.properties contains DEBUG_METHODS=true which is similar to the old DEBUG_ENABLED=true as well as HBR.maxconn , HBR.timeout, and DATABASE_CACHE_REFRESHRATE, and quite a few other settings.

The calcmgrlog4j.properties sets the level of logging for JVM OUTPUT .  INFO is usually sufficient unless directed by development to request DEBUG, which will write many extra unnecessary records to the logs.  You can set any of these components to log more information.

  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.awb=INFO
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.calcmgr=INFO
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.GenericLogger=INFO

The following are commented out by default:

  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.common.DefaultLogger=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.common.JSON=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.web.common.BaseAction=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.database.DBImport=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.web.common.DimensionServerService=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.core.CalcMgrSession=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.security.ObjectPrivilege=DEBUG
  • log4j.logger.com.hyperion.database.DBConnectionManager=DEBUG

For debugging purposes you can enable options to copy xml files that are generated during import, migration, validation, or deployment by uncommenting these lines and providing the valid directory (# eg: c:\\temp\\deploy. Double backslash as a separator is required) in the CalcMgrConfig.properties file

 #IMPORT_DIR=<import debug directory>

#MIGRATE_DIR=<migrate debug directory>

#VALIDATE_DIR=<validation debug directory>

#DEPLOY_DIR=<deploy debug directory>

Please note, these properties will eventually moved into the Shared services registry

*** Reviewed for Currency 10-Oct-2012 ***

Symptoms

Receive the error messages below loading the ads file during Dimension Import:

"500 -- Internal Server Error"

In logs see the error below:

"ERROR org.apache.struts.upload.CommonsMultipartRequestHandler - Failed to parse multipart request
org.apache.commons.fileupload.FileUploadException: Processing of multipart/form-data request failed. C:\DOCUME~1\user1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\user1\servers\EPMAWebServer\tmp\_WL_user\awb\user1\public\upload_00000008.tmp (The system cannot find the path specified)"

Cause

The TEMP and TMP variables are not defined in the Environment Variables for the "user1" that was used to start the services.

Solution

Log in to the server with the user "User1" and set the environment variable for TEMP and TMP by following the navigation

Cause

When Local (No agent) is used as the agent, execution is local to the client, not the ODI server. In this case, driver files must be installed to the client machine.

Solution

Install the driver files on the machine where the Agent runs -- in this case, the client.

To install the Hyperion adapters you:
1. Unzip
2. Copy all files in the Drivers folder to the Drivers folder under ODI install, e.g. c:\OraHome_1\oracledi\drivers

Symptoms

Business Rules available in the Planning web periodically disappear. Rules are available, both those attached to forms and in the list under Tools > Business Rules disappear.

This problems happens intermittently.

Cause

@ This is a manifestation of Bug 7417655 which is common in version 9.2.1

The embedded timeout parameter in the HBRServer.properties file is set to 10 by default. If there is more than 10 minutes of inactivity in Planning web, the rules disappear. Since the Planning web session itself is set to time out after 30 minutes by default, this leads to a situation where the web session is still available, but no rules are visible.

Solution

1. Increase the HBR.embedded_timeout= parameter in the HBRServer.properties file located under you Planning deployment. The exact path varies according to what web application server you are using:

TOMCAT:
\\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\Tomcat\5.0.28\HyperionPlanning\webapps\HyperionPlanning\WEB-INF\classes

WEBLOGIC
\\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\WebLogic\8.1\HPDomain\applications

WEBSPHERE
\\Websphere\AppServer\InstalledApps\\HyperionPlanning.ear\HyperionPlanning.war

OR

\\Websphere\AppServer\InstalledApps\\HyperionPlanning.ear\HyperionPlanning.war\WEB-INF\classes

This parameter is set to 10 minutes by default; increase it to 35 by editing the line below:

HBR.embedded_timeout=35

2. Save HBRServer.properties and restart the Planning service for the setting to take effect. You do not need to restart any other services.

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When attempting to add many members to 'Default Value' of Global variable of Business Rule the following error occurs:
Error while sending command to HBR Server running within the EAS server.
Detail:com.hyperion.hbr.excp.DatabaseException.<init>(java.lang.String, [Ljava.lang.Object;, com.hyperion.hbr.excp.ExceptionSeverity, java.lang.Throwable)

Alternatively if you create variables to hold these selections the rule is unable to validate resulting something similar to:
Detail:Cannot calculate. Analytic Server Error(1200422): Error parsing  formula for [FIX STATEMENT] (line 3): expected type [BOOLEAN] found [MEMBER] in function [OR]

Cause

This is due to character limit on column in table HBRVARIABLES VALUE VARCHAR2(255).

Using custom list of members assigned to variable.
eg. GVar1 "300000", "310000", "311000", "400000",...

Solution

Large cherry-pick-lists are not recommended due to table column limits and generated script size.  Instead Essbase functions should be used, hence the excluded section was added in the multi member selector to make it easier to build a selection using functions.

If the selection cannot be built using the children or decendants functions, use the @UDA function.  Members can be tagged with an UDA in the outline.
Storing the selection in the outline is safer than storing it in an Business Rule variable.

Applies to:

Hyperion Planning - Version: 11.1.1.0.00 and later   [Release: 11.1 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Business Rule Ruleset option 'Merge Variables' does not honour local variables.

Cause

Local variables cannot be merged across Business Rules as they could represent different values although they have the same name.

For example, the following shows a conflict if the local variables were merged:

FirstHBR variable 'Name' -> used to store the Entity name
SecondHBR variable 'Name' -> used to store the Account name

If these variables were merged, the member selection menu would only show either the Account or Entity members. Subsequently one of the RTP values will be invalid and the calculation will fail. In other scenarios the calculation may not fail but produces wrong results.

Solution

To take advantage of this feature use global variables. In addition, Business rules which use global variables are likely to perform better.

Planning users only: On Variables, select Merge Variables to merge all instances of the same variable
used in the business rule so only the first instance of each variable is displayed when the rule is launched.
If you do not select this check box, all instances of each variable are displayed.

Note:
If you select Merge Variables, the first value that the user enters for the runtime prompt is used
for all subsequent occurrences of that runtime prompt during validation and launch.

Symptoms

After changing the provisioning for a user from Administrator to Planner is not reflected in the Planning web interface.

Cause

The change in provisioning is not synchronized yet to Planning which means that users are still visible with their previous role.

Solution

Synchronization is triggered upon doing the following:

- When the user logs in.
- When filters are refreshed via the 'Manage database' option in Planning desktop (Selecting filters only).
- When access to a dimension/member is given to the user in Planning web, then that user is synchronized.
- Running the ProvisionUsers.cmd

Note: the provisionUsers has to be run on the Planning Server.

Symptoms

Starting a metadata upload via ODI Designer causes the error message "Driver must be specified".

Planning application uses Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA).

Cause

Planning application uses EPMA

ODI only works with Classic Applications.

Solution

Write to EPMA Interface tables instead.

You should be familiar with the section in 'Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Architect, Administrator's Guide' (epma_admin.pdf) entitled 'Using Interface Tables'.

1. Start off by defining/creating interface tables using the Configuration Utility.
2. In EPMA, create an Import Profile, mapping the interface tables correctly.
3. Once all this is set up and working, you start to load into the tables from ODI. You need to update the relevant tables, e.g. for Entities you need to update the HS_ENTITY_* tables. New members would have to be added to the HS_ENTITY_MEMBER and HS_ENTITY_HIERARCHY tables, and their properties to HS_Entity_PropertyArray and HS_Entity_Property tables.

Symptoms

When trying to export artifacts for a Planning application it fails with error:

Error "EPMLCM-30054: Failed to connect "http://:19000/HyperionPlanning/servlet/HspLCMServlet" while performing export for application - "". Received status code - "500" with error message - "Internal Server Error". Possible cause of error Server Down or Not reachable."

Similar error will occur during IMPORT activity as well. This can be related to all the artifacts exported of any Product on Shared services.

Cause

During LCM activity, Shared services uses the TEMP space on the Shared services server.  The drive configured for the TEMP was full.  LCM was failing as it could not find enough disk space to perform the migration.

Solution

1.  Clear the unwanted files in the drive where the TEMP folder is configured (check the Environment Variable on the Windows) OR increase the Drive size where the TEMP folder is configured.
2.  Restart the Foundation Services.

Goal

How can we migrate Business Rules from one Classic Planning environment to another when using Calculation Manager to manage them? The rules are not showing up in the destination environment Calculation Manager.

Solution

Planning 11.1.1.3 introduced the option to use Calculation Manager to manage Business Rules for classic Planning applications. However, there is no way to migrate the rules from one environment to another using LifeCycle Management (LCM) in such a way that the rules are manageable in the target environment Calculation Manager.

Because the Planning application is Classic, it is not listed under the "Foundation" node in Shared Services. Rules can therefore only be selected for migration using LCM from the Planning application node in Shared Services. When the export LCM files are imported on the target environment, the Business Rules are correctly copied into the target Planning application's relational database.

The rules are then available in the target Planning application, users can be assigned access, and they can be launched. However, they are not available in the target environment Calculation Manager, and there is no way to administer the rules. There is no way to "reverse deploy" the rules from the Planning application back into Calculation Manager.

To work around this issue the Business Rules can be exported from within the source environment Calculation Manager (File > Export). The exported XML file can then be imported in the target Calculation Manager and the rules deployed to the desired Planning application.

An enhancement request (9323549) has been logged for this issue.

Goal

Does Planning support removing/deleting dimensions once they are deployed from Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA)?

Solution

There is no way to remove dimensions from a deployed Planning application. There is no facility to delete a dimension within the Planning interface, a long-standing limitation that has been the case since long before EPMA was introduced as an alternative means of managing application outlines.

This limitation means that there is no way for EPMA to tell Planning to delete a dimension which has already been deployed.

The best option would be to restore the Planning application relational database from a backup taken before the unwanted dimension was created.

If no backup is available you can deploy a duplicate of your application as it currently exists in EPMA, and use the duplicate instead of the original application.

  1. Right-click on the application in the Application Library and duplicate it
  2. Deploy the new application using a new data source that points to a new, empty, relational database.
  3. Planning objects such as data forms and task lists can be moved from the old application to the new using either Lifecycle Management (LCM) or the FormDefUtil command line utility. Bear in mind that if you have web forms defined that reference dimensions that do not exist in the new application you will have to modify them to get them to work.
  4. Business Rules and Calc Scripts that were available in the old application need to be made available in the duplicate application too

An enhancement request has been logged to address this limitation in a future version.

Goal

You are using the process management feature in Planning, and you have e-mail notification turned on.
When the e-mail is generated to inform the user of a status change, the e-mail contains a link to the Planning application that does not go through the workspace.

Instead, it is a URL that goes directly to Planning outside the workspace (the URL that was used prior to the introduction of the Workspace). You want the URL to go through Workspace or not be shown at all.

Solution

To resolve this take the following steps:

1. Locate the HspCustomMsgs_en.template file in the
%Hyperion_Home%\deployments\tomcat5\Hyperion\webapps\HyperionPlanning\custom

2. copy it to
..\HyperionPlanning\webapps\HyperionPlanning\WEB-INF\classes

3. Rename it to HspCustomMsgs_en.properties

4. In this file do a search for MSG_PM_EMAIL_DEFAULT_MSG and hard coding the URL you want it to use or create a new variable with the value you want and assign it the host you want it to use.

5. Restart Planning service.

The Essbase server was installed as part of the EPM platform (not as Standalone mode) . How to start the Essbase server for administration purposes without shared Services. Is there is an alternative to the standard script or a Workaround ?

Solution

Since the registry database was introduced in version 11.x, it is not possible to startup Essbase as a standalone unless Essbase was initially installed in a standalone mode. Even if installed in a standalone mode, foundation Shared services needs to be installed first and once Essbase set up it could be started without Shared Services service actually running as opposed to a non standalone install.

Symptoms

In version 11.1.2.0.00 of the Oracle EPM LCM utility, unable to migrate Planning Application's access permissions via the Shared Services LCM Utility.  The LCM import of access permissions into the Planning applications fail with error "Premature end of File", displayed in the Migration Status Report.

Cause

This issue was caused by an unpublished BUG "10236113 - ERROR "PREMATURE END OF FILE" OCCURS WHEN LOADING ACCESS PERMISSIONS VIA LCM"

If there are no Access permissions associated with provisioned Group in the Planning application then the LCM utility will generate an empty .xml file for the corresponding Access permission artifact which will cause the error "Premature end of File"

Solution

This issue has been fixed in the Oracle EPM v11.1.2.1.00 release.  This release can be downloaded from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.

There are 2 separate workarounds that can be used in EPM v11.1.2.0:

1.  Add a single access permission to the provisioned group with no defined access in the source application and then import the LCM package into the target application.

2.  Ignore the error message during import and continue importing remaining artifacts.

After selecting the application, get error:

Message on contacting or application (appname) Server:Error(10200315) Error Parsing Formula for [Region Definition] (line 1): Invalid Object Type

Cause

This issue was caused by not doing a complete security refresh from Planning Web.  id not perform complete security refresh.

Note: The non-admin status refers to the Shared Services user IDs that are not set to admin. Admin Planning users, have access to all members in all dimensions, access to all forms, and have accounts set to admin through Shared Services. Using the admin ID on the admin user machine, you can make a connection using Smart View and Excel Add-In. Using an ID that is not set to admin connecting to the same admin user machine, you will get the error message in Smart View and Excel Add-In.

Hyperion Planning - Version: 9.2.0.3.00 and later   [Release: 9.2 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When deleting a member from Planning via ODI using Oracle source tables an error was signalled from the Oracle database but the columns in the ODI Model matched those of the table:

ORA-01747 invalid user.table.column, table.column, or column specification

Cause

One of the column names in the Oracle source table used an Oracle reserved word. In this case there was a column named 'UPDATE' when the column name was changed to 'UPDT' it worked fine.

Solution

Check the Oracle Database SQL Reference for the version of Oracle that is being used to see if any of the column names are on the list of Reserved Words. If any of the column names are on this list then rename the column.

Hyperion Planning - Version: 11.1.1.1.00 and later   [Release: 11.1 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

It is not possible to select a value for a run-time-prompt variable in Hyperion Planning if both User and Global Variables are available to the application.

Having created a business rule which uses a run-time-prompt variable, when the rule is launched in Planning it is not possible to select a member for this variable as the right-hand side of the member selector screen is blank and there is no submit button. This problem occurs after creating User Variables in the Planning application.

Cause

At this point in time this has been raised as unconfirmed Bug 8598901 NO SUBMIT BUTTON IN MEMBER SELECTION SCREEN WHEN ACCESSED FROM RUN-TIME-PROMPT.

Solution

The following workaround can be used to prevent this issue:

In Planning, select Administration, Application Settings and set the option
'Enable the Display of Substitution Variables' to 'Display None'.

With this set the member selector screen will display correctly and it will be possible to select the required dimension member from the list. It will not be possible however to see any user or global variables.

Issue Symptoms

When users try logging into Smart View Planning and selecting Ad-Hoc Analysis the session hangs and crashes. In addition, other users cannot log in and there is either a "Failure" or "Warning" notification within the WebLogic for the APS Module.

Cause

A metadata change had been made but was not correctly applied.

For example, a new parent was deployed, but the movement of subsequent account members to it wasn’t. The hierarchy is fine in EPMA, but doesn’t fully deploy to Planning, causing an orphaned Dynamic Calc parent.

Solution

Trace back and review recent metadata changes and correct as necessary.

Applies to:

Hyperion Planning - Version: 9.3.1.1.00 and later   [Release: 9.3 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The application cannot be validated in Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA). This also means it cannot be deployed (as deploying manually triggers a validation).

No error message is displayed by EPMA but a generic "errors on page" browser error warning icon
(a yellow triangle in IE, at the bottom left of the window) is displayed when attempting to validate the application. Note that this is not a validation error as such; it is the process of validation itself that fails. This occurs in both Internet Explorer 6 and 7.

Cause

This behavior is caused by the presence of hyphens in some member names within dimensions of the application that are of type "Smart List".

Testing with Fiddler shows that validation is started but that a failure occurs as a Smart List dimension (in this example "sl_LineManager") is being parsed:

SVR_ERR_VAL_INVALID_SMARTLIST_MBR_NAME","messageParams":["SL_ClaudiaScott-Hansen","TEST_sl_LineManager"],"messageType":"Error"}],"resultType":"Failure"}

All the members listed in the error messages contained hyphens in their name.

Removing the members with hyphenated names from the application view allows validation to proceed.

Solution

Remove or rename members of Smart List dimensions that contain hyphens within their member names.

Alternatively, you can deploy the application view using a scheduled TaskFlow. A scheduled deployment or redeployment does not trigger a validation (unlike a manual deployment), and therefore provides a temporary workaround to the problem.

Unpublished Bug 7674228 has been created for this issue.

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

In previous releases of Planning, we would set a data type in the Accounts dimension to Currency, Non-currency or Percentage. Planning would only allow the Accounts dimension to determine the data type on the cell.

How is this done in 9.3.0.1?

Solution

With the 9.3.0.1 release of Planning, the user is able to set the data type of any dimension and Planning determines the data type based on evaluation order.

By default, the evaluation type is not set on any dimension (no evaluation order).  In order to set the data type to match the old version of Planning, the user would need to login to the Planning application, go to the Administration menu and select Dimensions.  Then go to the tab called 'Evaluation Order' and select Accounts as the Selected Dimension. This would allow the data type of the Accounts dimension members to determine how the data is displayed.

Goal

How can we use the Smart View 11.1.1.3 client to connect both to Planning 11.1.1.3 and to an older Planning 9.3.1 system?

Solution
There are two ways that the Smart View 11.1.1.3 client can make a connection to a 9.3.1 Planning application:

  1. Connect directly to Planning, which does not depend on there being an available APS provider. This allows the user to open forms and run Business Rules. It does not allow for ad hoc analysis. If you do not require the ad hoc functionality then you can simply connect to the Planning 9.3.1 application(s) by defining the following URL provider in Smart View:

    http://hostname:8300/HyperionPlanning/SmartView

To use a URL provider change the view in Smart View from "Common Provider" to "Independent Provider Connections" and then Add a "URL Provider" and enter the URL above, where "hostname" is the name of your 9.3.1 Planning server. Note that you will see a message warning you that you are connecting to an older version of Planning, but that this is just an informational message.

  2. Connect via APS. This option allows the Smart View client to connect to the Essbase cube(s) of the Planning application, and perform ad hoc analysis similar to what can be done with the Essbase add-in for Excel. In effect you are connecting to the Planning application as though it were an Essbase application.

You cannot connect Smart View 11.1.1.3 to APS 9.3.1. However, if you require ad hoc analysis capabilities you can work around this problem by connecting to the 9.3.1 Essbase server via APS 11.1.1.3. In EAS 11.1.1.3 right-click on the Essbase Servers node and Add your 9.3.1 Essbase server. Now that your 9.3.1 Essbase server appears in the list it can be used by APS 11.1.1.3. In Smart View 11.1.1.3 you can now add the Essbase 9.3.1 server to the list and connect to it.

SYMPTOMS

The following error msg is displayed many times during different dates: "which is more than the configured time (StuckThreadMaxTime) of "600" seconds. Stack trace:"

Provider services is frequently going down hitting the following error:

<WLS Kernel>> <> <> <1289932400273> <BEA-000337> <[STUCK] ExecuteThread: '17' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)' has been busy for "651" seconds working on the request "Http Request: /aps/APS", which is more than the configured time (StuckThreadMaxTime) of "600" seconds. Stack trace

CAUSE

Environments need to be tuned when reaching the default setting limits interacting with Web Logic.

SOLUTION

In Essbase Administration Services use the default Stuck Threads settings as a starting point.
Then after careful testing of your long running transaction, adjust as needed.

Stuck Thread Max Time=600 ( Default Value)
Stuck Thread Max Time=1200 ( Suggested Value)

To modify the "Stuck Threads" setting:

1. Login to the Weblogic Admin Server Console.
2. Navigate to Domain Structure -> Servers.
3. Select EssbaseAdminServices0 (or the sever you want to modify).
4. On the Tuning Tab, select to "Lock & Edit".
5. Modify the setting "Stuck Thread Max Time" and "Save".

For more information on this setting, refer to KM Document "What Does a Stuck Thread Mean in WebLogic Server? (Doc ID 1287878.1)".

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

While re-ordering the dimensions via the Planning web, under the performance settings for manage dimensions, the system would lock up and the dimensions are lost.

Cause

There are multiple reasons this problem might occur.

Possible Cause 1.
It is possible that the users may be active and they were accessing the dimension when the reorder was taking place . which triggered the system lock.

Possible Cause 2.

The outline was not in sync with the Planning Application.

Possible Cause 3.

As the user is re-ordering the dimension the process of reordering was stopped and the dimensions were not shown in the planning web.

Solution

To resolve this issue restart the Planing services so that all the dimensions will display properly.
